Family gatherings are an opportunity to reconnect and recollect. Remembering some of the joys of the past can be encouraging, and sharing plans for work or school can be challenging and exciting. The reminder of love and purpose confirms the course and resets motivation.

Moses reconnected with his wife, sons, and father-in-law after leading Israel out of Egypt. Moses and Jethro shared a meal together in Yahweh’s presence to worship Him for all he had done. The next day, Jethro saw the way Moses was dealing with all the judicial needs of the people and encouraged Moses to appoint others to help share the load. Moses’ time with Jethro produced worship and better leadership.

After meeting with Yahweh, Moses brought His plans to the elders of Israel, and they, along with all the people, agreed to His commands (19:7-8). Community fostered mutual accountability, which was essential for them to be ready for the next steps in their journey with Yahweh.

Yahweh was calling them to a deeper understanding of His holiness. They needed a mediator, Moses, to bridge the gap between them and Him (19:24, 20:19). He was calling them to a holy life (20:1-17), one that made their relationship with Him primary and one that honored their relationship with others. Like Moses’ time with Jethro, this encounter at Sinai led the people to worship and more effective living.

Thank God for your church family. Pray that your interactions lead to richer worship and faithful living. Love God. Love people. Live holy.
