The Walking Dead
In this message from Revelation 3:1-6, Pastor David Rose walks through Christ’s hardest words to Sardis and asks the same question of us. Are we living on God’s past faithfulness, or is He doing something fresh in us right now? Christ calls the church to wake up, remember what it received, repent, and hold on. - Take a minute to read Revelation 3:1-6 out loud. Then read it once more, silently, watching for repeated words. What words or ideas repeat in these six verses? Write down what you notice.
- Christ introduces Himself as the one who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. Look back at Revelation 1:16 and 1:20. What do the seven stars stand for?
- If Christ holds both the Spirit and the leaders of the church, what is He claiming about Himself before He says one word of correction?
- Jesus says their works are not “complete” before God. Read John 15:4-5. What does Jesus say a branch cannot do on its own, and how does that explain Sardis?
- He says He will come “like a thief” at an unknown hour. Given that Sardis was a fortress city that had twice fallen to a surprise attack, why is that image important?

Reach outJesus is the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. He holds the life of His church in His hand. He came so that dead people could have life, and have it in abundance. On the cross He took the death our sin had earned. He was buried. On the third day He rose, alive and never to die again. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised. The work was finished by Him.
This is why the message to Sardis lands the way it does. Every person begins spiritually dead. A good reputation cannot cover it. Religious activity cannot raise it. Life comes from Christ alone, and He gives it freely, by grace, to everyone who trusts Him.
When you trust Him, His righteousness becomes yours. That is the white clothing Jesus promised to Sardis. You stand worthy because Christ made you righteous. God seals you with His Holy Spirit, a guarantee you belong to Him. Your name is written in the book of life, and He will never erase it.
So the call is simple. Turn from trusting yourself and rest in Christ. He is worthy of worship. He raises the dead, clothes them in His own righteousness, and keeps them to the end.
