To gain admission to an official event, one often needs an invitation. The gathering is to honor someone with great standing or to recognize a solemn event. Those who come cannot simply walk in. They must understand the gravity of the moment and the honor of attending.

Job’s friends had proven to be of little comfort to him in his suffering, but they repeatedly demonstrated they had a solid understanding of the holiness and majesty of God. As Job tried to determine the source of his suffering, they wanted to make clear that coming before God or talking about God required the humblest of postures. He deserves all honor.

Bildad spoke of God’s majesty and asked how a mere human could come before him or be justified (Job 25:1-6). Job echoed Bildad’s honor and recognized the complete power and sovereignty of God (Job 26:1-14). Job did not doubt God’s position or power. God remained in control of the present situation (Job 27:1-2). What he would not affirm, however, was that he lacked integrity (Job 27:3-4).

He knew there was no hope if God was not giving a person life (Job 27:8). Those who build a life on a foundation other than God will leave an inheritance for their children that will crumble (Job 27:14-15). God is the only source of hope, help, and mercy for everyone. Job was sure of this. His suffering and questioning had not lessened his full respect for God Himself.

Pray for a growing understanding of the holiness and majesty of God. Live in awe and obedience of His character.
