Navigating New York City can be challenging. Tall buildings block the sun and confuse direction. Busy streets and bustling crowds force attention on movement and give little time to dawdle or ponder. Having GPS guidance with an overheard map makes all the difference.
In his younger days, Jacob was a deceiver. He focused on himself to gain whatever he could for his own good. Over the decades, Yahweh changed Jacob’s character, his name, and his outlook on life. Like a divine GPS, Yahweh helped Jacob see life, and treat others, differently.
In his old age, Jacob learned Joseph was alive and thriving in Egypt. He packed up his family and possessions and moved to Egypt to escape the famine in Canaan. When he arrived, Joseph brought Jacob before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh (47:7). Standing before the most powerful man on earth, Jacob spoke words of blessing. His wealth was nothing in comparison, yet he could give blessing Pharaoh didn’t have.
As his life ebbed away, Jacob called his grandson and sons before him, and he blessed them as well. His early days had been selfish, but his latter years were selfless. He recognized the eternality of Yahweh and His plan for His people. Life was no longer about Jacob but about Yahweh’s fame and His people’s flourishing. He navigated life differently because he listened to a new guide. Yahweh was a promise maker and promise keeper.
Pray for a perspective like Jacob’s and Joseph’s that sees God’s complete control over life. Walk in faith and obedience.
