CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

We are so excited that you have visited us and are interested in becoming a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Church membership is not only important to us at Trinity for practical reasons, it is also very important to us for Biblical reasons. The Bible refers to the church as a “body” (1 Corinthians 12:12-27) and says that the “body” is made up of many individual parts, each of which has a unique function to fulfill and contribution to make to the mission of that particular “body,” or church. We believe in church membership because it helps us identify ourselves as a unified “body” that needs each person in order to function at our highest capacity. The Bible also talks about the importance of being part of a community that can help meet each other’s needs (Acts 2:42-47) and the importance of submitting ourselves to the leaders of a church (Hebrews 13:17), which both happen best through the commitment and accountability of church membership. While the Bible does not specifically command people to become members of a church, we believe that having a membership and committing to it is the best way to cultivate the kind of community the Bible describes the church to be.

How do I become a member of Trinity?

At the conclusion of the worship services, you will be invited by the pastor to come speak to one of our pastors regarding any decision the Lord is directing you to make. When you speak to the pastor, simply say that you would like to become a member of the church. You will then be introduced to a decision counselor who will walk you through the process of church membership.

The Bible teaches that to be a member of a local church, you must be scripturally baptized believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. The decision counselor will assist you in scheduling a baptism if it is required.

Do I have to take a class to become a member?

Yes. After you talked with a decision counselor or pastor, you will be signed up for Next Step, our new member class. This class is held about once a month on Sunday morning at 9:15am.

During this class, you will gain a better understanding of Baptist heritage in general and of Trinity Baptist Church specifically. If you have questions or would like to sign up to attend Next Step, please call the Church Office at 337-480-1555.

Why is baptism important?

First and foremost, believers are baptized because Jesus was, and He asked us to follow His example in all things.

“When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too.” – Luke 3:21

Baptism by immersion has many functions other than pure obedience to Christ. First it is a public identification with Christ and His mission. Second, it is a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
Third, it is symbolic of the inner cleansing and change which results from calling on the name of Christ for salvation.

“We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life” – Romans 6:4

The Bible compares baptism to the death and resurrection of Christ. For the new believer, this means that the condemnation and guilt of sin are “done away with” through Christ.
